Father/Son Movie – “Terminator Salvation” (2009)

The 7th annual Father/Son Movie outing also included Friend and neighbor Chris Smaling. Chris enjoyed being included in our long-running tradition and has already been invited to the next event, whenever it occurs in 2010. In a few years, these mostly annual outings, will most likely include another generation as well – Tobey!

Terminator Salvation was the fourth installation in the futuristic nuclear holocaust story where robots decide to take over the world. There have been a few movie franchises that have borrowed from this storyline, but this is the one that helped make Arnold Schwarzenegger a household name way back in 1984.

My favorite part of these outings, other than the movie itself, is heading to a nearby restaurant to discuss the movie over a beverage. We saw Terminator on the Giant screen at the Regal Continental (the best place to see the big action movies in Colorado) and then went to Chili’s next door for our roundtable discussion.

The majority of the reviews that I scanned before our movie night were unfavorable, but all 3 of us ended up enjoying the movie at some level. The tone of the movie was similar to several other recent franchise reboots (i.e. Batman) in that they choose a gritty, more real and realistic feel that seems to resonate better with current moviegoers, rather than maintaining the same kind of storytelling from the 3 previous movies. Casting Christian Bale in the role of a finally grown up John Connor was a good choice. The movie is set in 2018, in the early stages of the war between man and machines. The opening third of the movie is intense with great action sequences. We come to learn that the future has taken a slightly different path than Connor had been told about and Connor is not the full-on leader of the resistence, but just a voice more behind the scenes. The mysterious Marcus character creates some interesting moral dilemmas, and the climax to the story has some surprises as Connor and Marcus end up in the heart of Skynet operations.

I’m looking forward to seeing it again when the DVD/Blu-Ray comes out in early December.

A simple but fun tale of a father trying to find his way and re-connect with his son. A Sci-Fi tale that's safe to take the whole family too - great special effects, but a heart-warming story to go along with. Hugh Jackman did a great job in the lead role and the unknown actor that played his song was just as good.

Not nearly as witty as the world of Joss Whedon's Firefly that you might relate this to, but still, a good time at the cinema. More action and less clever dialogue than I had hoped for. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford were both great in their roles, even though they weren't given a lot to work with from the script.

This movie is a modern homage to Spielberg films of the past. Think ET + Stand By Me + Goonies, updated for 2011, and you have a pretty good idea of what you are in for in this movie. I watched a behind the scenes video with Director J.J. Abrams and he said he was striving to provide a character based film that had that summer popcorn entertainment value. I think he mostly succeeded, and if you judge the film on that basis, its an above average film. There are a few major plot holes, and the ending gets a bit sappy and doesn't really deliver like the rest of the film, but I walked out of the theater with my wife, happy that I had seen it. This film is not appropriate for young children, probably under then age of 11-12, so leave them at home.

The special effects were fairly top-notch, but this convulted attempt at a Sci-Fi film quickly lost its way and became such an utter mess towards the end that I found myself squirming in my cushy theater seat, ready for it to be over!

Go into this summer action blockbuster with low expectations and be prepared to not look too closely at the plot that is filled with holes, and you can walk out afterwards having had a great time. It's incredible treat to the eyes in its many action sequences, but don't look or think too deeply whenever the "story" tries to make a point. Not as good as the first movie in my opinion, but a worthy sequel.
